Very interesting topic. I recall a while ago the consensus was that computing power of common hardware in a few years would make brute-forcing feasible for any reasonably-sized passwords, the average user’s memory/will to remember a complex password being gradually loosing the arms race with raw computing power.
I guess in this case a solution may be using two factor authentication, with a key file to add a large amount of randomness to make brute force computationally infeasible (unless the key is somewhat recovered by the attacker, the complexity of this being unrelated to computing advancements). In example PeaZip is a Zip utility using two factor authentication.

Thanks! However, Appnimi Zip Password Unlocker continuously stops working after a very short period of time; it just stops. It will restart, but start over– not cool. I am running picozip on another computer working on the same file and it has been running for 7 hours without fail…

Antivirus programs consider anything that uses a brute force cracking module or code to be a trigger for a popup warning or automatic blocking if you have rules set or an inflexible AV.

Quite often AV programs throw up false positives, this is one of those times. You need to think about what kind of program it is you’re trying to download on these occasions. As an example, if you told a colleague at work you were downloading a zip file password removing app that brute force cracks the password, would they think you were a hacker? If the answer is yes, your AV program will likely come to the same conclusion!

It’s also worth noting whether your AV specifies it as being a PUP (potentially unwanted program) or a trojan, dropper or worm. A PUP warning is discretionary, a dropper warning not so! This means if you are downloading a program with some sort of ad delivery system, or a security circumvention tool of some sort it will be flagged, it does not however mean that it has a virus.

The downside of finding tools to circumvent security is your computer, between Windows and an AV, it will scream and holler that it’s under attack and to fire missiles at the incoming file. Use common sense and Google to establish if a program is actually a real threat and in time you’ll get more of a feel for it.

The top one (appnimi) attempts to install all sorts of malware, eg conduit etc… and DOES NOT crack the password at all. Never tested the others as they are all probably the same

None of the free zip password crackers exploit parallel computing within the GPU which makes them useless for brute force cracking of truly random permutations except the shortest of these that use a limited set of ASCI characters like numbers and lower case letters.

The link to the first unlocker actually leads to a file locker. Link is incorrect.
